I know what you are thinking, there must be a driver somewhere. A driver that is super optimized for gaming. I thought the same during my initial investigation. It’s not. There is no driver that would help you achieve that. And to be completely honest, I doubt the inbuilt drivers are that bad after all.

WICD is an open-source network manager. It is a complete replacement for the default NM. Aimed at a bunch of people who experience issues with NM.

Installing WICD

/!\ Wait! There’s a catch. There are 2 distinct ways of installing WICD. Depending on your setup, whether you are on GNOME or KDE /!\

On GNOME/Unity

Step 1: Download the latest Network manager, in case WICD does not work for you:

sudo apt-get install -d –reinstall network-manager network-manager-gnome

Step 2: Install WICD

sudo apt-get install wicd-gtk

Step 3: Uninstall default NM

sudo apt-get remove network-manager-gnome network-manager

Step 4: After checking that everything works fine. (right after rebooting and testing) – Remove NM config files

sudo dpkg –purge network-manager-gnome network-manager

On KDE

Step 1: Download the latest Network manager, in case WICD does not work for you:

sudo apt-get install -d –reinstall network-manager plasma-widget-networkmanagement

Step 2: Install WICD

sudo apt-get install wicd-kde

Step 3: Uninstall default NM

sudo apt-get remove plasma-widget-networkmanagement network-manager

Step 4: After checking that everything works fine. (right after rebooting and testing) – Remove NM config files

sudo dpkg –purge plasma-widget-networkmanagement network-manager

Setting up WICD

WICD setup is straightforward.

  1. Choose a wifi network to connect to

2. Go to properties

Select your encryption method and enter your preshared key.
The wireless bitrate does not need to be changed.

3. Enjoy !

Right off the bat, the difference was noticeable. My teammates’ voices on TeamSpeak were not garbled anymore.

It was as if we were on ethernet, literally.

I never thought that I’d say that. But playing Dota on wifi is heaven.

There is absolutely no lag, ping and latency levels were awesome.
